THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM

golem217.jpg

BARELY RIPPED

While many will revel in the gloriously lush presentation, "TheLimehouse Golem" plays too much as a clever theatre piece, rather thana peek behind your hands thriller. This would-be serial killer horrorfilm, suffers from endless self-inflicted stylish blows: it iscostumed, staged and acted to death. But what a beautiful demise it is.

Leave it to Juan Carlos Medina (directing) and the Brits (acting) tobring forth such a grandiose, poetic, cinematic feast. Channeling hisbest Hammer era Peter Cushing, Bill Nighy as the anxious yet calmlymethodical Scotland Yard inspector is exceptional, and almost elevatesthe film to a level it so deserves.

There just isn't enough grit and shock for the series of heinous crimesto get any juice flowing; even the gory corpses are presented ascarefully arranged, colourful still lifes. Dialogues are poetic andunspontaneous, simple scenes are meticulously choreographed, sets arelavished, wardrobe is wildly bombastic. It is a wonderfully lush, overthe top feast for the senses, that lacks proper plot delivery to createa deserving fog of mystery.

There's a nice, rewarding, twisty tale under all that distractingsheen, though it requires much work from the viewer.

Despite being yet another film set in London (yawn) The Limehouse Golemis atmospheric and will certainly hold your attention. This is partlydue to the detailed scenic constructions that create a dark, intimateatmosphere but also due to the excellent casting. Juan Carlos Medinabrings out the best in the cast. Watch how he uses the actors' eyes tocommunicate directly with the audience via the camera lens. OlivaCooke, alternately resembling Emma Watson and Julia Roberts, glows andsparkles and then freezes as the film jumps between her recalled memoryand her jail cell. Sadly, the usually wonderful Bill Nighy only hintsat his customary quirkiness and the inferred gayness of Nighy'sInspector Kildare and Daniel May's gentle George Flood seems strangelypointless. The interplay between audience the stage of the music halland the audience draws the cinema audience right into the heart of theaction. The music hall scenes are beautifully re-imagined and are a joyto watch. Douglas Booth turns in a beautifully sensitive portrayal ofDan Leno that reminded me of Eddie Redmayne in the Danish Girl.

Despite the fact that the film is a little under-written - I worked outthe identity of the Golem about one third of the way through the film -

this is a very enjoyable and convincing tale that is well told. Mymajor criticism of the film is that it is overlong. Sometimes less ismore and the film would have benefited by tighter editing of the finalscenes where fantasy and fact become confused leading to the audiencebeing not quite sure what is happening.

Overall, though, a very enjoyable couple of hours spent in the cinemaand please, film producers, let's have more films like this. But pleasealso remember that London was not the only location in the UK wheredark deeds happened in Victorian times. There was, and is, life andinterest outside London.

The new horror thriller film set in the Victorian Era The LimehouseGolem starring Bill Nighy, Olivia Cooke, Douglas Booth, Eddie Marsan,Daniel Mays.

The Limehouse Golem is set on the unforgiving, squalid streets ofVictorian London in 1880, our tale begins in the baroque, grandiosemusic hall where the capital's most renowned performer Dan Leno(English actor Douglas Booth - Noah, Jupiter Ascending) takes to thestage. The whimsical thespian performs a monologue, informing hisdedicated audience of the ghastly fate of a young woman who had onceadorned this very stage, his dear friend Elizabeth "Lizzie" Cree(English actress Olivia Cooke - Me And Earl And The Dying Girl, Ouija);for the beguiling songstress is facing up to her forthcoming death byhanging, having been accused of murdering her husband John Cree(Australian actor Sam Reid - '71, The Riot Club). Lizzie's death seemsinevitable, until Detective Inspector John Kildare (English actor BillNighy - Love Actually, Shaun Of The Dead) is assigned to the case ofthe Limehouse Golem – a nefarious, calculating serial killer, murderinginnocent, unconnected victims, leaving behind barely identifiablecorpses – and his distinctive signature in blood. All is not what itseems and everyone is a suspect and everyone has a secret.

Amongst the other actors / actresses in The Limehouse Golem includesEnglish actor Eddie Marsan (The World's End, Mission: Impossible 3) asUncle, English actor Daniel Mays (UK TV Series Mrs. Biggs, Welcome ToThe Punch) as policeman George Flood, Spanish actress María Valverde(Exodus: Gods And Kings) as Aveline Ortega, English actor Adam Brown(The Hobbit films, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) asMr. Gerrard, English actor Henry Goodman (Avengers: Age Of Ultron, TheDamned United) as Karl Marx, Morgan Watkins (Kingsman: The SecretService, Suffragette) as George Gissing, Egyptian actor Damien Thomas(Julius Caesar, Sinbad And The Eye Of The Tiger) as Salomon Weil, PeterSullivan (The Jackal, TV Series The Borgias) as Inspector Roberts,Amelia Crouch (The Huntsman: Winter's War, Alice Through The LookingGlass) as Young Lizzie and Republic Of Ireland actress Siobhán Cullen(The Inside, Jimi: All Is By My Side) as Sister Mary.

Overall The Limehouse Golem is a good horror thriller film filled withweird bizarre stuff, gory violence, theatre shows and plays, drama, police, detectives, a good insight in to the way of life back in theVictorian Era in the 1880's the time period The Limehouse Golem is setin, darkness, dark alley ways, murders, murder suspects, red herrings,a classic whodunnit murder cases, horse and carriages, old style blackcars, a race against time to find out the killer to seek justice, somehard hitting scenes and many other things throughout the film.

So I will give The Limehouse Golem an overall rating of 3 out of 5stars and The Limehouse Golem is worth seeing if you like films alongthe lines of the Sherlock Holmes films that Guy Ritchie directed andfilms set in the Victorian Era like From Hell amongst others.

So if you get the chance to see The Limehouse Golem in the cinema thenyou should go and see it sooner than later.
